“From security to housekeeping to building and grounds management, it’s my job to keep everything operating seamlessly while always anticipating challenges that may be on the horizon,” says Ramon (Ray) Vargas, who has worked in senior living for the past 10 years.

Supported by an outstanding team of operations professionals, Ray and his staff oversee a wide spectrum of responsibilities that would overwhelm many people. “Our collective goal is to keep every facet of the community performing optimally morning, noon and night,” Ray explains.

Managing Upgrades and Improvements

Vargas has overseen many of the recent enhancements at Applewood, including last year’s lobby and public spaces redesign and the addition of several new outdoor amenities introduced last fall. “It’s exciting to see a constant flow of changes and improvements,” he says.

“These upgrades are a true testament to how much management cares about making this retirement community a very special place to live.”

Security

“Keeping residents and their property safe is paramount. In the past year, we have added several new external cameras throughout the 40-acre campus.” Ray adds that the community also provides 24-hour staff security in addition to mobile security tours provided by CentraState Healthcare System and the Freehold Township Police Department.

Communication

Residents here truly care about this CCRC and want to make it the best it can be. Many have contributed their expertise and advice—engineers, police officers, woodworkers, designers—which has made a positive impact on the community. But we’re also friendly on a social level—they introduce their family and friends to me and always ask how my family is doing.”

Customizing Residences to Every Resident’s Taste

Before moving in, new Applewood residents have the opportunity to select their own decorative updates that make a house feel like home—polished kitchen countertops, soft and comfortable flooring and favorite paint colors. After making selections with marketing coordinator Lilly Busto, Ray oversees the floor-to-ceiling renovation of each new apartment.

Looking Ahead

Vargas says in addition to maintaining the community, he needs to prepare for the upcoming demands of future residents. “Technology plays a role in just about everything we do here. As an example, more residents are using personal mobile devices–iPads, laptops, smartphones. They aren’t just emailing messages and pictures–they’re logging onto Skype or Facetime for live video chatting. We have to be Wi-Fi strong community-wide to meet that increased demand.”

As Vargas heads outside to meet with the grounds crew, he says, “Every day, it seems like new people are moving to Applewood. This gives me a great sense of pride and responsibility.”
