As they entered their 70’s, George and Cathy Daughtry decided their large home in a Four Seasons 55+ active adult community was more space than they needed or wanted to maintain. The couple agreed that their next home would be where they would settle permanently.
The former machinist and billing professional toured many continuing care retirement communities (CCRC), preferring to remain in Monmouth County, where they had quick access to the Jersey Shore, outstanding parks and recreation, and all of the cultural amenities central Jersey has to offer.
They also wanted closer access to healthcare facilities, restaurants and shopping centers.
“We chose our new home with the vision of what would be important to us when we’re in our 80’s and beyond,” Cathy explained.
“Someday, we won’t feel comfortable driving anymore, so local transportation services were an important amenity we needed.”
“Once we stepped foot in Applewood, it just felt right to us,” Cathy recalls. “Every time we visited, the residents remembered us and offered a friendly greeting.”
The Daughtrys didn’t come to Applewood alone; their beloved dog, Jake, played an important role in their choice of apartment location.
Eventually, they selected the Sycamore model with a covered patio looking out onto a manicured lawn and trees.
“Before we moved in, our apartment was completely gutted down to the studs,” says Cathy. “We were able to choose our finishes, from flooring to paint colors to appliances.”
George Daughtry thought his wife was shopping prematurely when she purchased new patio furniture for their apartment during the winter months. But several warm spring days beckoned the couple and their dog out to their new patio several times, where they often enjoy a glass of wine or a coffee in the morning.
“We’re glad we took our time and found Applewood.
We know we’re going to love it here next week and for years to come.”
The couple is naturally social, which is one of the reasons George and Cathy chose Applewood. They also love all the fitness activities, from the indoor pool to the lighted walking paths all around the community.
They also plan to meet with Applewood’s wellness trainer, Matt Machin, to gain individualized recommendations for workouts in the Fitness Center.
“There is just so much to do, see and learn here,” says the couple. “It’s a real resort-at-home lifestyle and we’re going to enjoy it all.”
