‘Taste of Applewood’ Offers Spontaneous Culinary Pop-Ups

Here in Freehold, our managers are encouraged to try new things, ask residents for ideas and keep their eyes open for new trends that will translate into making Applewood an even more pleasurable community to enjoy retirement.

Dining Services recently introduced an innovative example of this mission—

Last month, they debuted ‘A Taste of Applewood,’ a new culinary ‘pop-up’ experience where residents can sample what’s on the menu tonight, tomorrow morning or taste-test a recipe under consideration for a special occasion.

Residents receive a same-day phone call noting the tasting time and location, which varies.

Retirement Community Living Should Feel Like a Vacation

“Culinary pop-ups started on cruise ships,” says Heath Braunstein, director of dining. “We thought it was a fun way for residents to enjoy an unplanned tasty treat now and then.”

Executive Chef Charles Arolla recently presented a pop-up braised beef brisket on a pillow of creamy mashed potatoes – a precursor to one of the evening’s dinner choices. This pop-up was hosted in the new community Coffee Bar.

“We think the art of dining here at Applewood should be an adventure, but also healthy and delicious,” Chef Charles explains. “It’s also a great way for our culinary team to get out of the kitchen and socialize more with residents.”
