Residents and Management Partner to Launch New Bike Share

You’ve probably seen the bright blue Citi Bikes in New York and Philadelphia to rent, ride and return.

We love the concept of biking—without the cost and storage hassles of bike ownership—and so do our residents.

“My friend Lucille rode an adult 3-wheeler for years down in Florida and said to me one day she wished they had them here at Applewood,” explains Spencer Halper, an avid distance cyclist.

An enthusiastic response from other residents compelled Spencer to meet with Applewood executive director Keith Grady to propose the installation of a new community bike share amenity.

Grady was immediately on board with the suggestion.

“Cycling is a great exercise option for seniors,” says Grady.

“We love the idea of adding more contemporary fitness amenities in a retirement community setting.”

As a single-entity Engaged Living™ community, the management team at Applewood has the freedom to respond faster to issues which are relevant specifically to our residents in Freehold.

“To my knowledge, we have the first retirement community bike share program in this region,” says Spencer.

Halper, who will act as resident coordinator for the resident biking program, named the new group the Applewood Freewheelers.

Fitness and Wellness coordinator Matt Machin says the two beach cruisers and two adult tricycles will be checked out of his office and through the Security Department on weekends.

There is no fee or deposit to residents for bike rentals.

Helmets are available for sale at a nominal fee and storage baskets on the tricycles make traveling with necessities safe and easy.

Offering a new outdoor amenity for cardio fitness and leisure

Resident Pete Talbot works out in the community Fitness Center three days a week and spends the other four days golfing. He has already signed up for the biking club.

“I like the idea of taking my daily cardio outside,” Pete says.

“We have a beautiful community and it will be nice to ride around and say hello to people.”

“Residents will have several paths to choose from, ranging from our lighted walking paths to the sidewalks which offer a nice ride around the community,” Matt explains.

Pat Kealy and her husband recently moved into Applewood and have already joined the Freewheelers.

“One of the reasons we chose Applewood was because of all the amenities that make you feel like you’re in a resort,” she says. “I haven’t been on a bike for a long time, so I’m eager to ride again.”
