Residents Bob and Weave at New On-Site Boxing Sessions

“You can always count on Applewood to add fresh new experiences for our residents,” says Wanda Garrin, Engaged Living™ coordinator. “One of our biggest hits this fall has been our new Saturday morning boxing classes from JuiceBoxx in Freehold.”

Men and women at Applewood are never shy about trying something new or rekindling a past hobby.

“When Jesus de Jesus reached out to me about starting boxing lessons in our Fitness Center, I knew immediately it would be a big hit,” Wanda says. “Discovering he was also a former employee here was the icing on the cake.”

Former boxer comes out swinging again

Pat Vallone hadn’t boxed in decades, so when he heard about the new on-site classes, he was the first to sign up. “I’m committed to exercising regularly, but didn’t consider putting my gloves back on,” Pat says. “I was thrilled to have this training offered just steps from my front door.”

Pat was pleased to see his jab-crosses come back so quickly. He’s taking it slow, but loves having gloves on again.

Bobbie Schneider is taking lessons to improve her balance. “I laughed when my doctor recommended boxing to help minimize symptoms I have from a medical condition,” Bobbie says. “I felt like it was kismet when the class opened here.”

Jesus de Jesus is the founder of JuiceBoxxNJ, located in Freehold. He and his team operate a juice bar along with boxing instruction, personal training and group fitness classes.

“People of all ages can benefit from boxing,” the certified trainer explains. “For seniors, the work on the upper body can boost metabolism and focus on balance management can make a big difference in minimizing injury from falls.”

It was a warm homecoming for Jesus, whose first job was working in Applewood Dining services as a teenager.

He notes older people are in better shape today than they were a few decades ago.

“Age is really just a number; it’s more about how physically strong you are to manage the inevitable health challenges that come with age,” says the owner of JuiceBoxxNJ.

Saturday morning boxing training in the Applewood Fitness Center began two weeks ago with about 12 male and female boxers and new participants are joining weekly.

Jesus says the class is designed organically and accommodates boxers of all fitness and experience levels.
