Flu and Virus Prevention Efforts Kick into High Gear at Applewood

Flu and Virus Prevention Efforts Kick into High Gear at Applewood

“We started special flu-prevention protocols early-on,” says Ray Vargas, manager of building services. “Thankfully, it is paying off as our diagnosed flu cases are very nominal so far this season.”

This year, in particular, the flu has taken a toll on the nation and New Jersey is no exception. CentraState Medical Center, our partner hospital here in Freehold Township, recently announced it would restrict hospital visitors to age 14 and older in order to minimize spreading the virus to patients and staff.

Applewood has added several additional antibacterial pumps at all entrances to the community and wipes aboard our private transportation. Residents are encouraged to use the wipes when they board the bus and when the re-board after weekly day trips or local trips around town.

“We have also increased the frequency of wiping down public areas with Lysol, including elevators, doors, door handles, intra-community telephones, handrails, the mail room and other places frequented by residents and guests,” Ray reports.

Nutritious Meal Delivery

Heath Braunstein, director of dining services, says if residents have been diagnosed or are displaying flu-like symptoms, the on-site medical staff advises them to stay in their homes to avoid potentially spreading the virus.

“We offer home delivery of a hot boxed breakfast, lunch and dinner for residents who are not up to dining in the Bistro or formal dining room,” he explains.

“Our goal is to provide nutritious meals during an illness, whether it’s our full meal or lighter fare, to help get seniors back on their feet.”

Residence Housekeeping Update

The housekeeping team at Applewood is responsible for cleaning and maintaining all of the community space, as well as 303 independent living residences, 40 assisted living quarters and 60 skilled nursing rooms.

We have a superb staff of 20 dedicated housekeepers, including a team who deep-cleans every independent resident’s home twice per month,” says Martha Minda, housekeeping supervisor.

Martha says her team uses germ-killing solutions throughout each home, including every door and appliance handle, landline telephones and other frequently touched surfaces.

“I’ve also advised my staff to be extra careful about maintaining their own health,” Martha says. “This is no time for our people to be ill. Thankfully, everyone is doing great.”

Skilled Health Care Department Precautions

“For the time being, we ask that if you are experiencing signs and symptoms of upper respiratory illness, please refrain from visiting the Health Care Unit,” says Linda Rizzo, director of healthcare services in the Health Care Department.

“We’ve also posted signage reminding everyone to continuously wash their hands throughout the day and continue to keep our department fastidiously clean.”

Until further notice, visitors to the HC Department are also asked to wear protective masks for the added protection of all residents.

Doing What We Do Best – Ensuring the Comfort and Safety of Seniors

“Right now, the flu season is kicking into high gear, so we are more vigilant than ever,” says Ray Vargas. “But like any other challenge, we partner closely with our residents to ensure everyone is safe, protected and healthy.”
